This three day class on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will be a power carving class of creating different types of limbs, logs, leaves, rocks and bases that that will help in designing the habitat for a bird and /or animal. You will need a dust collector, mask, power rotary tools and burrs. A wood burner with a selection of pens. Hand tools and a sharp knife. The cost of the class is $60.00 plus $10.00 for materials.

The Fancy Walking cane Class will be from 3 to 5 days depending on the student. The cost of the class will be $25.00 per day plus blanks from $55.00—$75.00. I will have blanks with different patterns for the student to pick from. I will be bringing extra cane blanks available for anyone who would like one. Once friend and relatives see your completed cane they will want you to make them one. They do make great gifts that can be enjoyed for years to come. Pyrography: Skill level:B-I-A. Class cost $30.00 per day. Take any combination of 1—6 days of Pyrography ( wood burning ). Beginning projects will require at least one day while more advanced projects can be completed with additional days.
Beginners are welcome any day or can come back for more on a daily basis. Beginners will learn the basic techniques of wood burning with emphasis on why the different techniques work. More advanced students can choose a project, bring a pattern of their own, or make a pattern from a book on my copier and work on it for 1 day or throughout the week. Project price range from $1.00—$20.00. If you have a specific project that you would like to do, please bring it with you.
Tools required: wood burner ( will have my preferred burners and pens for sale), graphite paper, red ink pen, clear ruler, pencil, and eraser. A light is helpful.
Instructor will provide beginning board and project.

All supplies needed to learn the soft shading technique will be provided- such as instruction sheets, practice panels, patterns, transfer paper and sand paper. Boards, boxes and plates will be available for purchase if so desired for a project. Oil pencils and acrylics will be available if a student wants to add color. A copier will be provided to make patterns from books or from an image you want to Woodburn. Although I like the soft shading technique with a photographic look, students are encouraged to use any style of wood burning they like. You will need a wood burner and tips.

Sculpting the Figure for Woodcarving- One day class Wednesday cost $45. Skill level: B-I-A All supplies (Super Sculpey, wire, sculpting tools, and instruction sheets) are provided. Extra Super Sculpey will be available for sale. Students will make a wire figure 7" tall. Students can use the wire figure to design the action they want to capture in wood. The figure will be covered with Super Sculpey and baked for a finished project. Rough outs can be made from the finished figure. Scrimshaw- one day class Thursday, cost $40. Skill level: B-I-A. All supplies are provided to learn the art of etching images on surfaces such as plastic, bone, or ivory. Using Plexiglas, you will learn to etch a design using a pattern, fill the etching with oil or ink and remove the excess. This method is repeated until you have a beautiful image. Scrimshaw is used for knife handles, pendants, or any smooth surface needing decoration. You will need to bring a good light and a magnifier of some type to this class..

Portrait Carving: In this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday class students will learn the techniques needed to carve an exact portrait. In class students will carve a portrait relief of an Indian. Students are encouraged to bring photos of a portrait project they plan in the future. All work is relief and done from photographs. Standard carving tools are needed for this class.

Block printing: In this Thursday Class students will carve a scene or line drawing on bass wood, this will be inked and placed into a hand press and printed on both paper and cloth. The student should be able to complete more than one carving and print in a class. Skill level is B-I-A.

Low Relief Carving -
In this two classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday or Thursday, Friday and Saturday; Students will learn the techniques developed by Elaine and Fred that combine low relief carving with details that are woodburned. The Carvings are painted with acrylics and stained with oil paint. Tool techniques for full sized gouges and woodburning tools along with elements of design will be taught as students execute first a small (6"x9") practice piece which is just woodburned and painted (no carving). This will be followed by the project piece (approx. 9"x15") which has the main design elements relief carved and the details woodburned. Students may select from the Stenmans' original designs including an old barn or cabin with a wooded setting and wild life details. The projects will be executed in basswood with bark remaining on the edges to create a natural frame. The basswood, paints and brushes are provided. The instructors have some woodburners for use.
Low Relief Carving Suggested Tool List
1) #3-35mm Swiss Made is preferred, but the Flex cut #220799 1 ¼” #3 is a good large
gouge for this purpose. Other gouges can be used. You may need to have a #4 to get the
same sweep as the Swiss Made #3.
2) #3 sweep gouges in various sizes 10-20mm.
3) A thin bladed bench knife
4) Various other size gouges, palm or full size that you may have.
5) Clamp on light. - If at all possible bring your 0wn light.
6) Padded 22"-24" stool- (Important item for comfort).
7) A good woodburning tool. Detailer, Detailmaster, or Colwood are preferred, but a Hot
Tool has some uses.
Instructors will bring some large #3 gouges and wood burning units for use in class.
Class Fees: The cost of the class is $95.00 per student per class. This includes the wood and paints for both projects. We will also have extra gouges and woodburners to share.

This one day class on either Friday or Saturday will offer acrylic and oil painting techniques including; washes, wet blending, dry brushing, feather flicking and tapping in feather ends. The understanding of feather colors and how to apply them, color values and intensity.Cost of class is $30.00, material cost is $10.00.
Instructor will furnish paint, glass palatte plate, paper towels, wash cup, resin casting containing feather groups, beak, bills, quills and tag board. Instructor will also have for sale some good quality Kolinsky red sable brushes and extra casted resin boards.
Student should bring Hair dryer, light, extension cord, metal palette knife, good teklon liner brush 00, 0/1 or 0/2, a good red sable cats tongue (Filbert) size 2, 4, 6, and rounds size 2, 4,and 6.
