| Elma Carlson 2AB | Beginning Chip carving: This Monday and Tuesday class will present not only basic cuts but also a through overview of chip carving from the beginning of a project to the finishing. Instructor will furnish a beginning kit (sand paper, transfer paper, burnisher, eraser and practice board), blanks, patterns, rubber cement and scissors. Cost of class is $75.00. Student should bring a sharp chip carving knife. Additional helpful items: light and magnifying glasses. | |||
| Elma Carlson 2C | Wednesday class, Carve a beautiful 12” Scalloped Heart plate ( Cost $40.00) or a 6” Scalloped Heart Plate ($35.00) features a leaf design on the outside border and a geometric design in the center. Instructor will furnish plate and patterns. Student should bring a sharp chip carving knife. Additional helpful items: light and magnifying glasses. | |||

| Debbe Edwards 4ABC | Carving the Standing Otter This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday class will focus on anatomy, muscle structure, hair texture and movement to create the realism for which her carvings are known. Much attention is given to expression, thus putting the life into their eyes. Debbe teaches using group demonstrations, along with individual help, giving hands on experience. Tools required: Knife, #3 gouge, #5 gouge, 1/2” U gouge, 1/4” U gouge, 3/16” veiner, 2 mm veiner, wood burner, paints and brushes. Instructor will have a limited number of these tools available for purchase. Cost of class is $130.00 plus blank cost of $28.00. | Robert Gorczyca 6A | Stylized Dolphin or Manta Ray This three day class presents the student with the opportunity of either a Dolphin or Manta Ray, both will be from Butternut and mounted on a base with supplied hardware. The cost of the class is $50.00 and a blank charge of $20.00. Instructor will also furnish the sealer and have some tools available to use during the class. Student should bring normal pencils, paper, basic carving tools and sandpaper of various grit. | Fernando Gutierrez 7A, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E or 7F | Relief carving on mesquite, inlay work, bone, and antler carving. Shell, egg and stone carving. Cost of class is $70.00 per day if you furnish your own equipment; $100.00 if you use the instructor’s equipment. Sign-up for one or multiple days. Instructor will provide 1/16” shank bits, dust collector, mask and Ear Plugs. Student tools needed: Power Carving Equipment ( Electric or Air). This class is a power carving class. | |||
| Don Hartt 8A, 8B, 8C, 8D, 8E or 8F | The Fancy Walking Cane Class will be from 1 to 6 days depending on the student. The cost of the class will be $35.00 per day plus cost of cane blank of $75.00. I will have blanks with different patterns for the student to pick from. I will be bringing extra cane blanks available for anyone who would like one. Once friend and relatives see your completed cane they will want you to make them one. They do make great gifts that can be enjoyed for years to come. | Hoyt Hutchinson 9ABC | Western themed Hiking Staffs During this three day class (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) Hoyt will teach Indian Heads, Mountain Man heads, inlaid crushed Turquoise, different leaves, vines, flowers, plus animal heads. Cost of this class is $75.00. Instructor will furnish, hiking staff, turquoise, paint and finish. Student should have knife, assorted gouges, power tools if you have; power tools require the use of a dust collector with them. | |||
| Hoyt Hutchinson 9DEF | Carve a Chip monk This three day class (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) will be just right to Carve, burn and paint a life size chip monk eating an acorn. | Gen Kreyling 11A, 11B, 11C, 11D, 11E or 11F | Pyrography: Skill level: B-I-A. Class cost $30.00 per day. Take any combination of 1—6 days of Pyrography( wood burning ). Beginning projects will require at least one day while more advanced projects can be completed with additional days. Beginners are welcome any day or can come back for more on a daily basis. Beginners will learn the basic techniques of wood burning with emphasis on why the different techniques work. More advanced students can choose a project, bring a pattern of their own, or make a pattern from a book on my copier and work on it for 1 day or throughout the week. Project price range from $1.00—$20.00. If you have a specific project that you would like to do, please bring it with you. Tools required: wood burner (I will have my preferred burners and pens for sale), graphite paper, red ink pen, clear ruler, pencil, and eraser. A light is helpful. Instructor will provide beginning board and project. Burners, pens, graphite paper and red ink pens will be available for sale. | |||
| Tom Kreyling 12AB, 12CD or 12EF | Free Form Chip Carving Tom is offering three(3) two (2) day classes Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday or Friday and Saturday. Learn to carve free form chip carving designs and other decorative elements that can be used to embellish your carving projects. There will also be a demonstration of calligraphy style lettering with further instruction for those interested in pursuing lettering. Cost $60.00 per 2 day class. Materials cost is $10.00. Additional projects available for $2.00 - $10.00. Skill level B-I-A. Tools needed: Chip carving knife, pencil, eraser, light, and a 12” - 18” clear ruler. | |||
| Mart Lind 13ABC or 13DEF | Yes, you can learn to carve a realistic, powerful face. Carve an Indian, a trapper, an old cowboy, or a civil War soldier. You can also do a creative project in a half log. Emphasis will be given to expression and presentation. Most students will complete their projects, so finish and waxing materials are included. Mart will have new projects ready for this rally, so check it out. Bring your creativity and prepare to do a project you’ll be proud of. Cost of either three day class will be $110.00 Wood and rough outs range from $15.00 - $65.00. The instructor will furnish all finishing materials– paints, stains, and waxes. The instructor will have some tools available for your use as necessary. Student should bring whatever carving tools you have, mallet tools, mallet and a work mate type holding device. | |||
| Stu Martin 14AB or 14CD | Carving the human form Stu has been a wood carving instructor for twenty six (26) years , Stu works one on one with his students. These three two day classes Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or Friday and Saturday are offered on carving realistic faces on over 50 pieces to select from– Indians, Mountain Men, and Santas. Each two day class will cost $100.00; blanks will be available at a cost of $20.00—$42.00. Students: normal hand tools only, bring your own light and power cord . | Pat Moore 15AB or 15CD | Carving a happy Santa Yes, Pat Moore, from Moore Roughouts will be instructing “Carving a Happy Santa in cottonwood Bark. The two day classes offered on Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday is a wonderful opportunity to learn and carve a collectors piece. The cost of eack two day class is $70.00 and includes the material to carve in. Student should bring your normal carving tool and the Santa Spirit to put into your Santa Note. | Charley Phillips 16A, 16B, 16C, 16D, 16E, or 16F | Carving Flower Pins and more. Charley returns to the Rally. She has been carving for 15 years and written for Wood Carving Illustrated. She has become known for her relief flower carving. Students can select a wild rose, daisy, pansy or sunflower pin in each one day class. Cost of this class is $35.00 per day and includes one flower blank. You have the option of carving one of the more difficult projects; these project will require more then one day and the purchase of the blank. The instructor will furnish one flower pin per class. Students need the following: a sharp knife, a 30 degree V tool (16/6) . | |||
| Ken Ramler 17A | Intro to woodcarving A one day class on Monday for beginningers, which will cover safety, wood types, tools and basic cuts. Students will complete a project during class. Instructor will furnish wood, and have some tools that students may use. Cost is $30.00. Tools needed: Bench knife, small #3 gouge and a small V tool. | |||
| Ken Ramler 17BC | Rocks and weathered trees. A two day class on Tuesday and Wednesday, students will learn to carve realistic rock formations and weathered trees from basswood. A variety of different type of rocks and ground covers will be covered, that could be hung on the wall or set on table. Cost is $60.00 with one blank included. Instructor will provide paint and finishes. Student should have small and medium hand carving tools needed. Skill level: Beginner, intermediate and advance. | |||
| Ken Ramler 17DE | Flying owl on Moon This two day class on Thursday and Friday with the option for Saturday if needed. The Owl is butternut and the moon is basswood. | Floyd Rhadigan CCA 18A, 18B, 18C, 18D, 18E or 18F | Caricature Carving Students may choose from over 60 rough-outs, priced $10.00—$25.00, Painting materials will be provided for those wishing to paint. You may choose to spend a class painting a finished carving. Cost per day of $40.00, blanks available for purchase , priced $10.00—$25.00. Paints, brushes, pallet and antique finish will be furnish by Floyd. Student should have: carving knifes ( hogger and detail), palm tools ( gouges and V Tools ), and any of your favorites. | |||
| Adair and Patty Rucker 19ABCD | Carve and paint a Santa Adair will teach carving a Santa from Monday to lunch on Wednesday. Student will select one Santa from a choice of rough outs. Wednesday afternoon , Patty will teach painting techniques while Adair prepares the carved Santas for painting on Thursday. Thursday, Patty will direct students in painting their Santa. Cost of this class is $150.00; the cost of rough out is extra. All supplies needed for the painting lesson will be supplied. | |||
| Patty Rucker 20A or 20B | Wood burning Patty will Demo a soft shading technique in wood burning that makes a woodburning look like a photo. However, any style of woodburning is welcomed. Take one or two days, Monday or Tuesday. Cost of class is $35.00 per day. Instructor will furnish patterns, practice board and transfer paper. Student will need a woodburner and burning pens. | |||
| Patty Rucker 20E | Scrimshaw Student will learn techniques for creating scrimshaw. Instructor will furnish practice panels, pins and inks. Students need a light and a magnifier of some type. This is a one day class, Friday. Cost of class is $35.00. | |||
| Milton Smith 21AB or 21CD | Bark carving in the round. In this two day class Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday you will be carving bark structures in the round. The cost of either two day class is $60.00, no materials are include in this $60.00 fee. Supplies are available from the instructor: bark blanks for sale $10.00—$15.00. Tools required: A multi plug-in, carving knives, gouges, chisels, super glue (thin and thick), lamp for additional lighting. Optional: wood burner, acrylic paints with brushes. | |||
| Elaine and Fred Stenman 22ABC or 22DEF | Low Relief Woodcarving Students will learn the techniques developed by Elaine and Fred, which combine low relief carving with details that are wood burned. The carvings are painted with acrylics and stained with oil paint. Tool techniques for full sized gouges and wood burning tools along with elements of design will be taught as students execute first a small (6"x9") practice piece which is just wood burned and painted (no carving). This will be followed by the main project piece (approx. 9" wide x15" to 28" long) which has the main design elements relief carved and wood burned details. Students may select from the Stenmans' original designs including an old barn or cabin with a wooded setting and wildlife details. The projects will be executed in basswood with the bark remaining on the edges to create a natural frame. The basswood, paints and brushes are provided. The instructors have some wood burners for student use. Low relief carving suggested tool list - 1.Padded 22"-24" Stool (Especially for those with back problems). 2. #3 -35 mm Swiss Made. The Flexcut #220799 1 'l4" or a Stubai #4/35 may be substituted for this gouge. 3. #3 sweep Swiss Made (or other) gouges in various sizes from 10-20mm. If you use Stubei or other brands, you will find that you may require a # 4 sweep, as most brands have less sweep than the Swiss made. 4. A thin bladed bench /detail knife. 5. Various other size gouges- palm or full size that you may have. 6. Clamp on light. ( Instructors will bring some lights) 7. A good wood burning tool. Such as a Detailer, Detailmaster or Colwood Note: Instructors will bring some large #3 gouges and wood burners for use in class. | Jim Thalacker 23A | Carving the White crappie This big five day project, you will carve, burn and paint a White Crappie from a blank. Carving will take two days and must be completed by Tuesday evening. Painting will be done in a classroom and take 3 days, because with the stencils the paint has to dry between several (17) coats of paint. Cost of class is $150.00, material cost is $20.00. Instructors material charge $20.00 will cover wood cut out, fin cutouts, 1 pair of fish eyes, eye and fin setting compounds, template making materials and materials for painting fish. Student should have basic carving tools and knife, wood burner with medium and large burning tips (FSM and FSL) models required. Basic power tools, your own air brush and small air compressor if you have one. Bring your own mount for the fish, (wall mount or table mount) this is required before you can paint. | Jim Thalacker 23B | Air brush techniques for fish This class will use a non toxic, non flammable water based paint. Learn to clean, repair, maintain your air brush. Prime and paint on a test board. Learn to make a stencil ( pre-made stencils can cost as much as $50.00 or more). Cost of this class is $30.00 and material cost is $15.00. Students will work in pairs and paint on a flat surface. Instructor will furnish paint, test stencil, cleaning fluids, air brush and compressor to share. Students should bring you own airbrush and compressor, you will get more benefit from the class. | Jim Trumpy 24ABCD | American Goldfinch This will be a 4 day bird class for all skill levels.. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday student will be power carving a American Goldfinch. The class will paint the carving on Thursday. All skill levels are welcome. Cost of this class is $120.00 which includes the blank, eyes, paint and reference materials. Student must bring basic power tools, wood burner, paint supplies and DUST COLLECTOR. | |||
| Jim Trumpy 24EF | This 2 day Habitat Class Friday and Saturday will focus on mounting the Carolina Wren. Also open to anyone wanting to work on mounting fish, animals, or birds. Students will be working with wood, brass, copper, paper, and epoxies. Cost of class is $60.00 and will include the supplies needed. Students should bring basic power tools, wood burner, knives, small torch, tin snipes, and holding devices. Student will be working on wood, brass, copper, paper and sculpting materials, you should bring a dust collector if you will be power carving. | |||
