ST. CHARLES AREA WOODCARVERS

October 2004

Club News

During the weekend of Sept 18th and 19th, the St. Charles Area Woodcarvers held their 15th annual show in the St. Peters Community and Art Center.  Show Chairman Charles Sapp and his committees did an outstanding job in putting the event together.

St. Peters Mayor Shawn welcomed the group back for their fourth show in the facility.  He reviewed the exhibits and was impressed with the variety and quality of the woodcarving and woodworking on display and he presented his Award for Excellence to Charles Sapp for his cowhand and to Charles Mitchell for his bust of Jesus.

In addition to the exhibits and vendors, demonstrations and soap carving for kids were available both days.  Warren Rauscher from Raymore, MO showed visitors and carvers his detail chip carving technique that gives the appearance of wood burning.   Several scouts and their leaders participated in the soap carving.  It’s fun to see what young people can do with a wooden knife.

As well as the Mayor’s Award, carvers competed for ribbons in 24 major categories, four best-of-show awards and two People’s Choice Awards.  Best-of-show winners were Jim Leifeld, Professional; Bill Maguire, Advanced; Dorothy Clarke, Intermediate; and Corky Breece, Novice.   The People’s Choice awards were won by Charles Mitchell and Jack Combs.

Thanks to our vendors Richard Weitzman and Slim's Woodshed for providing tools, supplies and wood.  And thanks to our sponsors who so generously supported the show: Len Dillon-Diamond D Studios, Arbortech, St. Peters Community and Art Center, Rockler Woodworking and Hardware, St. Charles Hardwoods, and our club members.

The St. Charles Area Woodcarvers host this event to inform people in the community about the hobby and activities available.  The St. Peters Community and Art Center is located at 1035 St. Peters Howell Road.  The group meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  For more information contact Charles Sapp at 636.928.0149 or email Charles@TheSapps.com.  See us on the Web at www.iidbs.com/wdcarver.

Remember last month when the newsletter featured Wilbert giving Martha and other members instructions on tool sharpening.  Check out the progress, Martha is now working on her own tools!  Kudos to Wilbert for the instruction and to Martha for being courageous enough to give it a try.
