April 2005

 Club News

FALL SHOW:  Club officers and directors established the entry fee for the fall show: $20 for members (with a $5 refund if a item is donated for the raffle); $25 for nonmembers; and $30 for venders (per table).  Applications are being prepared for distribution to other clubs.  Judging will be open to everyone entered in the show - members and non members.

CARVING PROJECTS:  Several club members participated in carving instruction offered by club members Wilbert Brewton and Charles Sapp during the March meetings.  Wilbert instructed members on laying out facial features and provided some valuable tips on how to carve them.  At the same time, Charles Sapp provided instruction on how to carve an eye.

Martha Byron and Bill Kuhn work on a face with Wilbert.

Al Westfall, new member Rick Meroney, and Freda Keegan carve eyes on a practice stick.

Please let me or a club officer know when you can lead a project.  Wood burning, free form carving, chip, spoons,...have been suggested; what would you like to teach.  If you are a new member and have a specific interest let us know, we will get you a mentor.  Projects will start at the second meeting of the month.  The following meeting (first of the next month) will be used to complete the project.

SEMINAR:  Jim Leifeld is going to host his hummingbird power carving seminar.  Contact Jim ASAP if you are interested so we can get this seminar scheduled.

NEW MEMBERS:  Please join me in welcoming two new members to the club, Rick Meroney and Bob Berg.  Rick is from the St. Peters area and was in two of the carving classes at the Community and Art Center.  Bob recently moved from Manchester to O'Fallon.   Welcome!

NAME TAG:  Making a name tag and wearing it at the meetings has been a club rule for years.  And a new enforcer is in town!  Watch out for this man.  His name is Russ Sears and if you don't have your name tag on at the meeting, he'll be collecting twenty five cents from you.  Name tags can be carved, burned, sawed,.....whatever you like.  But they must be made by you.  Be sure to wear yours proudly and keep the collector away.  New members have a short grace time before Russ comes looking for them.  Thanks to Russ for taking on this role for the club.  The variety of name tags is always a point of interest.

LIBRARY:  Martha continues to improve the functionality of our library.  Have you noticed how she has organized all of our books!  Great job.  Thanks also to Al Westfall.  Al donated a book to our library.  He had ordered some books by e-mail and mistakenly received two of one book.  When he explained the situation to them, they told him to keep the extra book.  So Al donated it to the club library.  The book is "The Beginner's Handbook of Woodcarving" by Beiderman & Johnston.  It now is available to be signed out by our members.

If you have checked out any books or videos please return them in a timely fashion, so that others also will have the chance to check them out.

Clown carved in butternut by Wyatt Sample.  It has some great detail - check out the clown's collar. Carved (and sold) by Don Kley during his snow bird retreat to Florida.  Santa figures carved by Dee Kley during her snow bird retreat.  Welcome back snowbirds.

Relief carving Perry Courtney. Wyatt also carved this Uncle Sam.  He seems to be smiling.  He must be thinking of your taxes.  Nice relief carving by Walter Schmierbach.

Charles Sapp carved this Santa.  It's a Sear's roughout but the country blanket pattern was replaced with a Mizzou logo.  The next one will have a JayHawk.
