 Club News

FALL SHOW:  Club officers and directors established the entry fee for the fall show: $20 for members (with a $5 refund if a item is donated for the raffle); $25 for nonmembers; and $30 for venders (per table).  Applications are being distributed to other clubs and will be available at the next club meeting.  Judging will be open to everyone entered in the show - members and non members.   The show is Sept 17th and 18th at the St. Peters Community and Art Center.  Tickets for the 50/50 raffle will be offered at the door by the greeters.  Admission is free to those 16 and under.  Contact me for an application and rules.

New Video for the library:  Gene Webb, a Smoky Mountain carver, has donated a video to the club on "Carving a Comical Smoky Mountain Black Bear with a Pocketknife".  Gene is a wildlife carver and instructor and has several instructional videos.   Gene's web site is: http://gwwoodcarver.com.  I got to meet him on a visit through the Smokeys a couple of years ago when I stopped in at the Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Supply in Townsend, Tennessee.  Special thanks to Anthony Stevens of Stevens Video Productions for providing the tape.

CARVING PROJECTS:   Wilbert is looking into starting a club project of a scene carving, similar to the Full Moon Saloon.  Let Wilbert know what you think about this project and if you would like to participate.  More to follow on this project.

Club members, Ray and Wyatt, stock up on rough outs being sold by Charlotte. Bill Maguire works with Mary McGinley on a chain.  She was inspired by Mike's carving.  See Mike and his chain in show and tell pictures below. Club members, Freda, Barbara, Martha, Bill, John, Charlotte, and Joyce discuss their carving projects.

Please let me or a club officer know when you can lead a project.  Wood burning, free form carving, chip, spoons,...have been suggested; what would you like to teach.  If you are a new member and have a specific interest let us know, we will get you a mentor.  Projects will start at the second meeting of the month.  The following meeting (first of the next month) will be used to complete the project

Dave Lincoln carved the Emperior in basswood with great details.  His next work is a female companion for the Emperior.  Then Dave has to decide if he will leave the carvings natural or paint them.

Mike McGinley finished his chain.  He said it was done out of shame.  But it sure looked like basswood to me.  Great work, Mike.

Relief carving in catalpa of Pope John by Charlie Mitchell.  However, some members thought it might have been a self portrait of Charlie (see picture below). Otter carved by Al Westfall. Bob Craven is working on a bear.

Relief carving by Charlotte Cross from a John Englert pattern. Relief completed by Joyce Fritz in a wooden saw cut out.

Santa carving by Corky Breece from a Rossiter roughout. Bill Kuhn displayed a Christmas ornament that the West County Club is doing for charity sales at their November show.

July Show Case - Art Center Competition

The display case is being used for entries in the Art Center competition.  Several members have entered carvings.  Check out the displays.  Member displays will resume in late July/August.

NAME TAG:  Making a name tag and wearing it at the meetings has been a club rule for years.  And a new enforcer is in town!  Watch out for this man.  His name is Russ Sears and if you don't have your name tag on at the meeting, he'll be collecting twenty five cents from you.  Can you identify the club member from the name tags?

This is an early edition.  We're headed to Doane.  I'm enrolled in a Santa carving class with Michele Carville.  My wife, Dale, will be doing basket weaving with Buck Reinecker.  Looking forward to seeing Len Dillon (Len's class is doing a walking lion),  Gerald & Barb Sears (caricature) and other carving buddies.

When you have an item for show and tell, please get my attention before you leave (presuming that I remember to bring the camera).
